Kenya inquiry targets Somali militants
United States officials say they believe a Somali-based Islamic
group may have carried out Thursday's twin attacks on Israeli
targets in the Kenyan city of Mombasa.
The officials say the group, Al-Ittihad al-Islamiya (AIAI),
also known as the Islamic Union, is a prominent militant organisation
in the Horn of Africa with links to Osama Bin Laden's al-Qaeda network.

At least 15 people have died in a suicide bombing
at an Israeli-owned hotel in Mombasa, Kenya, just
as two missiles were fired at an Israeli holiday
jet that had taken off from the city's airport.

Gunmen strike during Likud polls
Seven people are reported to have been killed
in a running gun battle with Palestinian militants
in the northern Israeli town of Beit Shean.
At least two gunmen opened fire on the central
bus station before moving on to the nearby local
offices of the governing Likud party which were
packed with voters.

Nigerian Miss World show cancelled
The Miss World contest is moving to London from Nigeria after riots
by Muslim youths opposed to the show left more than 100 people dead
in the city of Kaduna. The pageant's organisers said the show would
be held in London on 7 December instead of the Nigerian capital, Abuja.

Bush, Putin tell Saddam to disarm
ST. PETERSBURG, Russia -- The United States and Russia urged Iraq on
Friday to disarm fully in accordance with a U.N. Security Council resolution
or face "serious consequences." "We call on Iraq, in strict compliance with
UNSC resolution 1441, to cooperate fully and unconditionally in its disarmament
obligations or face serious consequences," a joint U.S.-Russia statement said.

Al-Nashiri's help has already led to warnings
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Al Qaeda operative Abd Al-Rahim al-Nashiri, captured last month,
is talking, sources say. His interrogation has already led the FBI to warn about
possible attacks on U.S. warships, ports, naval bases and cruise ship docks.

SOMALIA: Peace talks "on course" says Kenyan envoy
NAIROBI, 13 Nov 2002 (IRIN) - The Somali peace talks, under way in
the Kenyan town of Eldoret, "are on course", a statement issued on
Tuesday by the office of Elijah Mwangale, the Kenyan special envoy
and chairman of the Inter-Governmental Authority on Development's

SOMALIA: Puntland to continue cooperating with UN
NAIROBI, 6 Nov 2002 (IRIN) - The authorities in the autonomous
region of Puntland have denied asking the UN to leave, stating they will
cooperate fully with the UN and other international aid agencies.
Abdishakur Mire Adan, the Puntland deputy information minister, reacting
to local media reports told IRIN on Wednesday that Puntland had not asked
the UN to withdraw its staff. "Puntland has not asked the UN or, for that
matter, any other agency to leave Puntland," he said.

US signals Iraq breakthrough is near
US officials are signalling that a deal has been reached with
France and Russia to overcome their objections to a new resolution
against Iraq.

ADDIS ABABA, 4 Feb 2002 (IRIN) - IRIN interviewed Colonel Hassan Mohamed Nur
"Shatigadud", chairman of the Rahanwein Resistance Army (RRA) and leader of
the Digil and Mirifle clans, at the Ghion Hotel in Addis Ababa. "Shatigadud"
(Red Shirt) is a former Somali army colonel who worked as a member of the
former National Security Service (NSS) and has his power base in Baidoa.
Formerly a supporter of Somalia's Transitional National Government (TNG)
and a member of the transitional parliament, he withdrew his backing and
went to Ethiopia. He is now a co-chairman of the opposition Somali
Reconciliation and Restoration Council (SRRC). He talks about his
movement, and his relations with the TNG and Ethiopia.

Mid-term poll on knife-edge
Americans are voting in mid-term elections to decide who will control
both houses of Congress, in a race that is too close to call.
All 435 seats in the House of Representatives are up for grabs in the

Israel to hold crisis elections
Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has called early elections
after failing to rebuild his crippled coalition government.
Mr Sharon described the move as the "least bad option," but
said he had been forced to act because he could not agree to
